“Global Warming my …”

It’s been like this the past three days and I’m ready to pull my hair out (At least the view from our room is pretty rad, eh?)

So, what have I been doing indoors? I have been brewing up ideas for our bedroom. I do not want to spend any more mulah on furniture and we have yet to buy a headboard. I have decided to create my own somehow… and these are some ideas I have come up with:

I thought the pillow headboard was creative, but I know if I tried to pull it off it would look way tacky. What are your thoughts? Any ideas? You would think that decorating is in my blood since mamma Debs is so talented… but don’t be fooled! I need help.

Wish me luck! I will keep you posted.

CTR: Simple Bedroom Updates

Want to update up your bedroom without spending a lot of time and money? Here’s some quick and easy ideas:

Paint a wall or two.

If you choose to do only one wall remember that it once it is painted it will become the focal point in the room. Paint is one way to make a dramatic change without a lot of cost.

Change your bedding.

Since your bed is the largest item in the room- whatever you do on your bed will change the look and feel of the entire room. It can be as simple as  changing a few pillows.

 Change the art.

Sometimes just moving your art to a different wall will make a dramatic difference. Or how about changing the style and color of the art you currently have?

Add some drapes.

Fabric drapes at the windows or over the bed may be the only thing that you need to do for a quick bedroom change.

Rearrange your room.

If you have the space- move the furniture in your room into a different layout. Or use a piece of furniture in an unusual way. Don’t forget the principles of Feng Shui (which we will talk about in my next post) when placing the furniture in your room.

Happy updating!

CTR: Dressing UP in the Bedroom

(Warning: This post is not what you think-It’s about bedding not lingerie.)

You can’t talk about a bedroom without spending some time focusing on the bedding. The way a bed is made up makes the difference between a nice looking room and a FABULOUS one.

Here’s some information to consider when you get ready to dress up your bed:

Sheets

Common fabrics:  Egyptian and Pima cotton, Percale, Sateen, Flannel, Jersey

Or Linen?

You will want your sheets to match and coordinate with all your other bedding. Chances are that it will show. Have you ever considered mixing and matching patterns? Just make sure that the sheets share the same background color.

Bedskirts

Three most common types are ruffled, box pleated and tailored.

 Ruffled

Box Pleated and Tailored

Duvet vs. Comforter

What’s the difference?

Duvet cover is another name for a Comforter cover.  It’s like a large pillow case and is used to cover a comforter but has button, zipper or tie closures to stay on.  Using a duvet cover makes changing your bedroom decor easy and quick.

Duvet covers come in all sizes.  It is, however, important to consider the size of your comforter prior to making a purchase.  For a good fit they should be no more than 2″ more or less than the size of the comforter.

A new duvet cover is a quick and easy way to change the look of your bed.  There is a wide selection of fabrics available giving you the immediate ability to change the look of your bedroom.

Cleaning your duvet cover is usually as simple as washing your sheets.  Simply tossing them in your washer and dryer is commonly all it takes.  Be sure to check your duvet covers cleaning instructions for proper care.  Duvet covers typically needs to be washed only with the changing seasons.

What size bedding do you need?

(I thought this would be a good thing to add-since nothing looks worse on a bed than the wrong size coverings.)

Bed Size Mattress Size Bedspread Size Comforter Size Blanket Size
Twin 39″ x75″ 80″ x 110″ 68″ x 86″ 66″ x 90″
Twin XL 39″ x 80″ N/A use Twin 68″ x 90″ N/A use Twin
Full or Double 54″ x 75″ 96″ x 110″ 78″ x 86″ to 86″ x 86″ 80″ x 90″
Queen 60″ x 80″ 102″ x 116″ 86″ x 86″ to 86″ x 94″ 90″ x 90″
California or Western King 72″ x 84″ 114″ x 120″ 102″ x 86″ to 102″ x 94″ 108″ x 90″
Dual or Eastern King 78″ x 80″ 120″ x 120″ 102″ x 86″ to 102″ x 94″ 108″ x 90″
Daybed or Trundle 39″ x 75″ 84″ x 117″ 66″ x 92″ 66″ x 90″
Waterbed Super Single 48″ x 84″ N/A 68″ x 86″ to 66″ x 92″ 66″ x 90″
Waterbed Queen 60″ x 84″ 84″ x 108″ 68″ x 86″ to 86″ x 86″ 80″ x 90″ or 90″ x 90″
Waterbed King 72″ x 84″ 84″ x 108″ 86″ x 86″ to 102″ x 86″ 90″ x 90″ or 108″ x 90″

Coverlets

(A fancy name for bed cover)

Woven coverlets typically have raised and colored designs which are often symmetrical and geometric in nature, though not always. Because people do not come into direct contact with a coverlet, woven coverlets may be made from coarse, scratchy materials, as the texture is not terribly important. Woven coverlets are also extremely light, providing little in the way of insulation, because they focus primarily on providing decoration. Historically, lightweight wool has been a popular choice for woven coverlets, but silk, linen, cotton, and other fibers may be used as well.

Pillows

These are the “icing on the cake” where bedding is concerned. Take the pillows away and you change the entire look and feel of the bed.

In my last post on bedding I went over all the different choices in pillows that you can put on your bed. Make sure that you mix it up. Plan how your pillows will be put onto your bed before you begin purchasing.

Happy Decorating!

CTR: My Feather Fetish!

I love down filled pillows. I love how “gushy” they feel, I love how they change shapes to fit whatever purpose that’s intended and I love how much better they make pillows look.

So in honor of my “feather fetish” I thought that we should look at pillow ideas for the bedroom.(Not the kind of feather pillow I’m talking about)

So-how many decorative pillows should you put on your bed? According to Good Housekeeping-pillows should not take up more than half of the bed. Sound pretty reasonable to me. But my husband would agree with most interior designers who believe in keeping the number of decorative pillows to a minimum. So I say-do whatever YOU want.

So why are down filled pillows so wonderful? Down pillows allow you to arrange your pillows in a sloppy but organized fashion. All you need to do is karate chop the top of the pillow-in the center-to achieve the ” pillow dip”.

I love the pillows on these beds because they make the  white bedding “pop”. The firmer, straighter, clean line look of the decorative pillows are achieved by using poly fillers inside your pillow-not down.

Pillows often help to carry out the room’s decor theme. Imagine how boring this room would be if you removed all the pillows.

Another bed pillow idea: Use one pillow to add a different color to the palette. A great example of keeping the number of pillows to a minimum.

When organizing pillows on your bed-you don’t have to have 2 pillows in each pattern or style. In addition, sometimes fewer pillows on the bed allows you to see the detail of each pillow.

I L.O.V.E. these pillows. What a great way to make a statement in a bedroom. Find pillows that add interest to the bedding.

Using pillows that are all the same-like  these white ones-allow you to use more pillows without feeling like there’s too many. Pillow count=9

This bedding set shows the many different sizes of decorative pillows that you might consider using for your bed. Some of them most commonly use:

Euro size pillows 26×26 are the largest size pillow on the bed . They are usually positioned on the bed against the headboard. These make up the back row of your decorative pillows. For example, on a king size bed 3 fit across the back nicely.

Pillows sizes that make up the next row of pillows on the bed are typically the following sizes: Standard 20×30-Queen 22×30 and King 22×34. These pillows are the same sizes as the one you sleep on and are typically covered with a sham.

Smaller decorative pillows are typically  used come in the following shapes and sizes:

Square:  12″, 14″, 16″, 18″, 20″, 22″ inches

Rectangular:  9×16 and 12×18

Bolster(round neckroll):  7×16

Round: Just about any size -but I would keep them on the smaller side.

Here’s a great pillow from Global Views that is entirely round. Keighley happened to find it while going through the GV catalog while working one day at Bella Fine’ Decor. We all fell in L.O.V.E.

I’d love to hear your “pillow” ideas!

Happy Decorating…
