What are the odds?

Odds of Having a Boy 51/49- Here is a breakdown. It may be a little confusing but it makes sense.
The odds of having a boy seem to increase after having girls, except after 2 girls, when a 3rd girl is more likely.
The odds of having a girl seem to decrease after having each boy, but only very slightly. Even after 3 boys, you are only 6.4% more likely to have a 4th boy than a girl.

Odds of Having an All Same-Gender Family
If there are roughly even odds of having a boy or a girl with each baby, given the laws of chance we should still expect to see some all same-gender families, even in large families. Here is the number of all same-gender families we would expect to see, purely by chance:
Family Size Same-Gender Mixed-Gender
2 Children 50% 50%
3 Children 25% 75%
4 Children 12.5% 87.5%
5 Children 6% 94%
6 Children 3% 97%
7 Children 1.6% 98.4%

Gender and Birth Order
Given the charts above, it looks like you are slightly more likely to have a boy, regardless of previous children. This is probably due to the overall 51/49 boy/girl birth ratio. This ratio, interestingly, varies slightly with birth order; it isn’t consistent among first-borns, second-borns, etc.
1st Born 51.0% Boys
2nd Born 52.2% Boys
3rd Born 48.6% Boys
4th Born 50.8% Boys

Well here it is if you haven’t heard already! See if you can figure it out by these pictures.

If you are bad at figuring out ultrasounds… it’s clearly a boy! Now I will take any boy name suggestions. I’ve been thinking of ONLY girl names the past 4 months. I had the best girl names. Oh well. I love my boys and can’t wait to meet my 3rd little man. :)

Jamie’s Is Having A….

Today was all about this girl (and the pea in her pod).

Earlier today, random family members met Jamie down at her…… ultrasound!

We all waited anxiously to see the little bean.  My only complaint, “popcorn would have been nice”.

Grady thinks the gender announcement in a “thumbs up”!

So, what do you think it is?  Boy or Girl?

Just in case!

I’ve been looking on line here and there for snuggly cute little baby items.  Nothing specific just looking around at what is the latest and greatest.  SO… just in case this baby growing inside my belly is a GIRL, here are some fun, super fresh things I’m loving right now.  Luckily they all come in boy styles too so no worries.  I just need to change the pink and creams to blues and greys.  We will see come Friday!

I’ve seen some cute diaper and wipe cases before.  In fact my friend, Kate made me one for Grady and I love it and still use it.  These are adorable as well.  Always a good purchase.

Diaper and Wipe case from here

Since my baby will be born in January I will need some warm clothing.  Something with feet would be nice.  I love these.  So simple and chic and cozy.

Above Outfit from here

Even though my babies don’t like pacifiers past day 3 or 4, these would make a great baby shower gift.  Who knows maybe this one will be different and I’ll be on the pacifier band wagon.  But honestly, I don’t push the paci!

Pacifier Pyramid from here

If I had a girl I’d want her to look just like this.  This little outfit makes me smile.

Little Girl Outfit from here

Love these.  Such personal detail would be so great in the nursery.  Loves!

5 ingredients or less- The Forgotten Cookie…

This was the “recipe of the day” on Arizona Midday a few days ago.  The Forgotten Cookie… should be just that… FORGOTTEN!

If I see something to eat, smell something to eat, think of something to eat… I WANT IT NOW!  So, after watching them make this on TV and it looked soooooo yummy and sooooo easy, I decided why not.  I’ll whip some up! I had all the ingredients after all.

I used my favorite find at Crate n Barrel to easily get the egg whites out!  Love it. $2.50.

Directions for The Forgotten Cookies

2 large egg whites, room temperature
1/8 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (or almond extract if desired as substitution)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
(Or ½ cup chocolate chips and ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans as an option)

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper or Silpat.  (If you don’t have parchment paper or Silpat, lightly grease and flour baking sheets.) Beat egg whites, salt and sugar together until stiff peaks form. (This may take a little while, depending on the power of your mixer.) Fold in the vanilla or almond extract, chips and nuts. Drop by heaping teaspoonful onto lined cookie sheets. Place the cookies into the preheated oven, shut the door and count to 60. Turn the oven off immediately. DO NOT OPEN OVEN DOOR. Let cookies sit in the oven for 3 hours or overnight. Makes about 18-24 cookies.

It took about 15 minutes in my blender (on medium) to get the right consistency so don’t give up.  It needs to be fluffy and white in color.

Warning… these are interesting.  I had high expectations and I was VERY let down.  Just being honest.  They look really pretty.  They sort of taste like marshmallows and then as you chew them, they become a little like taffy.  Super easy to make though and not a lot of clean up.

Let me know what you think… if you make them.  You may love them, who knows?  I threw them away!

Kids Craft- Rain Sticks

For those of us not on vacation, not taking our kids to school just yet, here is a fun craft you can do with your kiddos.

I hosted a Kids Craft and storytime at my house last week.  The first idea for a craft that came to my mind was a Rain Stick.  Probably because my kids and I have been wanting it to rain so bad for weeks now.  With no such luck.  The kids did such a good job and they loved the rainsticks.  You should try it.  Maybe if everyone in the Mesa/Phx area made one and did a rain dance, it will actually rain.

Here are the instructions and supplies.  I basically made up my own but you get the idea.

Paper towel rolls

Cutin half or you could use toilet paper rolls.  I would’ve used the whole roll but I had a lot of kids coming over.

Felt.

Cut into circles to fit over the top of the rolls with about an inch hanging over so I could hot glue them down.  So no rice or pasta would fall out.

Yarn.

To wrap around the felt to close it off.  It gives it a fun look.  I used multicolored yarn.

Pasta, Rice,  Popcorn kernals (the list goes on here)

Anything that is loud.  I saw someone use nails but thought that may be dangerous.

Pom poms, paint, stickers, whatever you can think of to put onto your rain stick to give it some style.

Paints and paint brushes.

Hot glue gun.

After you close one side of the paper roll you hot glue your felt to close off the end.  Pour about a tablespoon of rice, pasta, etc. into the roll.

Then close off the other side.  Make sure it is all secure.

Now you can start to paint and decorate.

Have fun and let’s hope it brings the valley some much needed rain.

Here is Grady with his rainstick doing his raindance.  A cousin doing the perfect raindance!  Go Kale!

Happy Rain Dancing!

“It’s so hot in the desert”

This is what I hear everyday from Trey as we walk from the car to the mall, car to church, car to a house, etc.  Yes Trey, we live in the desert, yes there are rattlesnakes and yes it’s FREAKIN HOT!  115 today, 114 yesterday and 116-117 tomorrow.  Get use to it.  We’ve had a few catastrophies already.

#1 Trey’s Gummy worms.  These during church.

#2 The No bake cookies I made for my neighbor.  She wasn’t home so they sat in my car while I was a the mall.  Maybe they will harden up and I can eat them later.  Yum!

#3-4 crayons and chapstick.  In my purse I might add. Luckily they were in a baggie but still, come on!  I’ve decided to put a small cooler pack in my purse/car his week.

Also, I got to thinking, if I had a new baby this time of year what would I be doing?  Probably staying in but if I did have to get in the car and go anywhere, I would buy this for the car carrier.

What to wear? Maternity clothes survival guide

This pregnancy has been crazy!  I’m only about 13 weeks and I already need maternity clothes.  I’ve tried on a few Gap pants because they were on sale for $7.99 and  praying to the fashion gods that they would look PERFECT.  They did not.  I’ve even tried The Bella Band that my sister gave me, only to find my pants still slipping down and the band staying put right under my little belly.  So I thought I’d make up my own Survival guide.  Not that I will go out and spend tons of money on maternity clothes, that is so against how I work.  However, I am needing to get a few staples (especially since I’ll be making my way home to AZ from CA in 2 days).  Sniff sniff.  I’ve really been comfy in my swim suit and cover up.  We’ll see what I find and what my wallet can handle.

Here are my Top 8 picks

Japanese Weekend white top

I walked into this store at Fashion Island a couple nights ago and thought this is a place I could do major damage.  Everything was so soft and looked so comfy and oh so stylish!

Liz Lange Ruffle Front Dress.

Boyfriend Cardi by Gap.  Perfect since I’ll be due in January and the rest of my babes were due end of spring time.  I have zero warm maternity clothes!

Love this outfit but not sure I’ll be able to pull it off.

Of course you’ll need a great pair (or 2) of comfy jeans.  I like the look of these.

Most turtlenecks are soft and snuggly, but the Lauren Kiyomi Doll Sleeve Turtleneck will make you look sweet and stylish, too.  I could see having this one in 3 different colors.

Ashlee Simpson’s top and bottom looks like exactly what I’d like to wear for the next 6 months.

Love me some dresses.  I love grey too.  This one you can find at Nordstroms.

That’s it for now!  Good luck and let me know if you find anything good for cheap.  Or if you have a secret spot to shop at or if you want to do a Maternity swap.  I’m so done with my clothes.  Keep cool!

“Now I’m Bonded”

So the Bella Girls have dropped subtle hints the past few weeks about my recent condition. Some have caught on (Jen C.)  I just finished my first OB appointment and now I’d like to announce that I.AM.PREGNANT! Thanks to my fertile mertile genes (or Johnny’s) we will be expecting our newest edition on January 15th, 2011.  After leaving the appointment and hearing the heart beat for the first time Johnny said to me, “Now I’m bonded”.  Thanks, babe!  I’ve been bonded with the toilet for 4 weeks, glad You are just feeling it now.  Anyways, Johnny and I are so excited to add another munchkin. Nervous…. YES. Having the two kids has been a dream! Yikes, what am I doing?

Speaking of dreams. Bring on the weird dreams of Brody Jenner (nothing racy, just him and I hanging out as friends)

and Brad Paisley this time.

Which means I’m having a girl. It use to only be all about Brody! We’ll find out boy or girl in two months!
This pregnancy so far has felt more like Trey’s where I am popping these

More info here.

I’ve been so sick.  The Zofran is helping.  I have a bit more sympathy for those who want to legalize marijuana because if Zofran was illegal, I don’t know what I’d do but I’d do anything to get it!

My poor hubby.  Nothing tastes good to eat, nothing sound good to eat and I can’t prepare my own meals (cha ching!)  Which wouldn’t be that bad but I am STARVING ALL THE TIME!  Which is why it may be twins.  We’ll find out in two weeks when I have my first ultrasound.

By the way, I’m about 11 weeks.  This is a picture of the baby at this stage.  It’s the size of a Kumquat.

Let’s hope in a few weeks I turn a corner and start feeling normal again!  Until the next update, I’ll be laying on the couch with these two joys!

Get your candy on- Kids Recipe

Did you know June is candy month?
I found this great Martha Stewart recipe on macaronikid.com.  I don’t know why this made my mouth water but it just did….hmmmm, interesting.  Anyways, you can find how this recipe came to be by going to macaronikid.com and reading the story behind it.

Here is the yummy an pretty easy (yet very unhealthy) recipe.  Enjoy your candy!

Butterscotch Candy

Ingredients
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup water
2 teaspoons vinegar
1 pinch salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions
Generously butter a 10×15 inch baking pan (with sides).
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, butter, white sugar, water, vinegar and salt. Cover and bring to a boil. Remove lid and heat, without stirring, to 270 to 290 degrees F (132 to 143 degrees C), or until a small amount of syrup dropped into cold water forms hard but pliable threads (softball stage).  Pour in vanilla, but do not stir. Remove from heat and pour into prepared pan. Let cool slightly before cutting into squares and allowing candy to cool completely.

“Where do we have to go today?”

Is what my 4 year old son asks me EVERY SINGLE DAY. No joke. I love it too because it makes me be creative sometimes. Especially this summer. During the “school” year my reply usually was “school buddy”.
The previous two weeks my response every day was “swim lessons” and now swim lessson are over!  So… when I started thinking about my post today, it has really forced me to plan out my next couples weeks. I’m excited to share with you Jamie’s Boredom Busters Agenda!  To help me out with what to do this summer my friend Lachelle Bodine has a website called Macaroni Kid! She is the editor and publisher. She sends out a weekly newsletter of all the “happenings” going on around Mesa. Most of the stuff is free too which is great! You should check out her webiste and sign up to receive her emails.

http://mesa.macaronikid.com/

She also has Special Giveaways sometimes and I just won a family 4 pack to the CIRCUS next weekend.  I’m so excited to take my kiddos.  I don’t think I have ever been to a circus either so I’m just as excited!

Also, I wanted to give a shout out to the City of Gilbert swim lessons. I paid $23 bucks for Trey to have Private swim lessons. HINT TO MOMS: Register for the very first session of Gilbert’s swim lessons and you will have your own private lessons too. Out of the 8 available spots only 4 were filled in his class. 3 other students only came twice. It was great. Trey learned so much. This is our second year doing the first session. I highly recommend it.

Agenda for Summer 2010!

  • Mondays: Clean house, boring day, maybe swim at G-Debs?   Head to library to pick out a book for the week.  My boys love this and I need to do it more often.
  • Tuesdays: Borders story time with Mrs. Karren. Free story time and arts and craft activity. I hope Grady won’t be too crazy. I know Trey will enjoy it!
  • Wednesday: Harkins movie Fun! I think I paid $14 bucks for like 10 movies. Again, hoping Grady won’t drive me crazy. At least I will be there with Aunt Ashley (aka Bella girl sister) so if I need to take Grady out she’ll be able to hang out with Trey and the rest of the bunch!  Then probably hit up Chick Fi la for lunch.
  • Thursday: Kids Club at Superstition Springs Mall. 10AM. Free. Free carousel rides. Free toys, free paradise bakery cookie, is it a surprise why I love going to this?
  • Friday: I’m hoping to go swimming on Fridays. This is a free day. Whatever plans get made.

Not too shabby! Sounds like my kind of summer.

I’d love to hear of your summer plans.  Anything I should know about?  Comment or send it to us.  Also, if you have any questions about my above activities just let me know and I can get you further details!

This Past Weekend —

This past weekend, we took a trip to our Grandparent’s cabin in Strawberry.  Every time we go up there, I spend a couple of hours going through the local antique/thrift stores.  This past week’s antiquing trip proved to be most successful.  We bought a ton of fun stuff {pictures to come}.  For now, please take time to swoon at Jamie’s below antique find.

Don’t you just love those colors?  So hot right now….

Do you read to your kids?

Last week we had doctors appointments with the boys pediatrician.  Since Trey turned 4, he got some big boy testing.  Trey had his first vision test… PASSED!  His first hearing test… PASSED.  (PS, try getting a 4 year old to raise his hand every time he hears the beep when he thinks it’s super funny is very entertaining.)  Anyways, the doctor kept asking me questions like, “does he talk a lot?”, YES “does he play outside?” YES, “do you limit the tv watching?” YES, “does he eat fruit and veggies?” YES, “does he like to run and climb?” YES, etc. The one that made me stutter a bit and feel like I was fibbing was when he asked me if I read to Trey.  I know, such a simple one, right?  Trey loves to read.  He’s memorized a few books already.  He goes to bed with a book and flips through pages before he falls asleep at night.  BUT… the doctor didn’t ask if Trey likes books, he asked if “I read to Trey”.  I really don’t read to him that much, probably once a week.  So, I failed.  I came home and looked up the importance of reading to your preschool and the benefits it brings.  So now… I am going to share those with you and also share some of Trey’s favorite reads.  Happy Reading!

The Benefits of Reading to your Preschooler

The vast mass of knowledge in the world can only be gained by reading, and if you want your kid to be smart, he has to acquire a love for reading.   This love for reading can be instilled in your kid as early as in his first few months by reading to him.

Many studies have demostrated that reading to your child have many priceless benefits.

For example, a study was made in Rhode Island Hospital to compare two groups of eight months old – one group was read to often as babies, while the other was not.  It was shown that those who were read to have their “receptive” vocabularies (number of words they understand) increased 40 per cent since babyhood, while the non-reading group increased by only 16 per cent.

Indeed, reading to your kid is one of the most effective way of building the “language” neural connections in his growing brain.

Tips on reading to your Preschooler.

  • Let your child indulge in his interest when reading books.  Visit a book store or local library and let your child choose the book he likes.  Remember, you want to teach your child that reading is fun!
  • To further encourage reading, read aloud together with you pointing at the words.  If your kid makes a mistake, say the correct word and move on.

Other benefits of reading to your kid are as follows:

  • Reading to your kid makes you bond with him, and this gives your child a sense of intimacy and well-being.
  • The intimacy of reading to your kid is such a pleasurable experience to him that he will have a positive attitude towards reading as he grows up.
  • It calms your child, especially when he is fretful and restless.
  • It promotes increased communication between you and your child.
  • Pre-school children who are exposed to language by hearing words that are read to him and in conversation tend to do well in school.
  • It promotes longer attention span, which is an important skill for your kid to be able to concentrate.
  • It builds listening skills and imagination.
  • Your young child learns about colors, shapes, numbers, and letters, while your older child discovers an expanding chain of knowledge.  His interest in cars, for example, will expand to his interest in trucks, and other transportation like planes and rockets, and soon he will be reading about outer space, science and technology, and so forth.
  • Books teach your child about relationships, situations, personalities, and what is good and what is bad in the world he lives in.  Fantasy books provide material for his imagination and free play.  Fairy tales fascinate your kid, and help him distinguish between what is real and what is not.

Kids’ Craft- Garden

So, April was Garden month, who knew? Anyways, my husband started a garden a couple months ago. I was looking for some fun “garden crafts” to maybe spruce up the decor around our garden. Here are some things I found. Happy Gardening.

Garden stepping stones. I love these!

Click HERE for the details on how to make these stepping stones using simple concrete mix, gardening plates and craft store beads.  So easy!

Then I found this. My family use to do this all the time and I loved watching the birdies come eat what I made them. Trey and Grady will L.O.V.E making this and having a “pet” come over and eat.

Materials Needed:

String

1/2 of a Stale Bagel

1 Teaspoon Peanut Butter

1 Teaspoon Shortening

Bird Seed

Scissors

Instructions:
Cut a piece of string about 24″ long. You can adjust this length depending on where you want to hang it. Put one end of the string through the hole in the bagel and tie both ends together to make a large loop to hang up your bird feeder with.

Mix together the peanut butter and the shortening. Spread this mixture onto the flat side of the bagel. Pour the bird seed onto a plate. Press the peanut butter/shortening side of the bagel into the bird seed.
Hang this bagel bird feeder in a tree or anywhere outside and watch the birds make it disappear!

Mr. Potato Throat

Meet Mr. Potato throat.

That is how the ear nose and throat doctor described my 2 year old, he sounds like he has food stuck in his throat. It’s cute but it shouldn’t sound that way. He has swollen tonsils.  He’s had them since November (ish) maybe even longer.  He has sleep apnea because of it.
Because our pediatrician says it’s not getting any better, he recommends seeing the ear nose and throat specialist. The specialist told us we need to take the tonsils out. I will probably be getting a second opinion before I go back to this specialists only because I’m not sure he’s done this surgery on a 2 year old often enough. I mean, they didn’t even cater to kids in this office. The nurse asked Grady how old he was. When he didn’t respond she says, “you don’t know?”. Then Grady said ONE… I then told the nurse he just turned 2 and doesn’t really know how to answer these questions you are asking like, “does your throat feel funny”? What? Then, as Grady was sitting in the chair, he kept playing with the arm rests that would go up and down and she told him to stop because he was making too much noise. Anyways, second opinion to come but I’m sure I will hear the same thing. He needs his tonsils out. I know he does. I’m just hoping it clears up on his own so that doesn’t happen. I have about 4 weeks for this miracle. So we shall see. Anyone else have these problems with them personally or with their children? I’d love to hear if there are other options out there for me.

Kid Recipe- Blueberry Bake!

My wonderful childhood friend, Renelle, sent me this recipe.  So yummy.

This could make a wonderful Mother’s Day breakfast in bed as well.  Enjoy!

1/2 c brown sugar

1/2 t cinnamon

1/2 c dry oatmeal

1 stick of butter melted

3/4c. white sugar

1 package of pillsbury flaky biscuits in the tube

Toss blueberries in a bowl of white sugar, Mix brown sugar, cinnamon and oatmeal in a bowl.  Melt butter in seperate bowl.  Cut biscuits in 1/4′s, dip in the butter and then into the brown sugar mixture to coat them.  Grease a casserole or square baking dish. Put coated biscuits in dish and then sprinkle blueberries over them.  If you have extra butter you can drizzle it over the top of everything.  Bake at 375 for whatever it says on biscuit container.

Field Trip!

So I took Trey on a field trip to The Phoenix Children’s Museum.
We have never been there and have always wanted to GO.
AMAZING. If you are a mother of young children this is a must. It’s not even that pricey. We were there from 10:30 til about 12:30. Pack a lunch or bring in your own. You truly must do this, especially once it gets too hot here in AZ this is a great indoor place to hit up. Here are a few photos of todays fun. Sorry, all were taken from my cell phone camera.

Tricycle races through a car wash.  So fun.

Grady picked me some Mother’s Day flowers.

Grady of course found a motorcycle and had to get on.

Grady made me some pizza.

There was a grocery store. Trey waited in line so patiently. He doesn’t get that from me.

Grady, I feel the same way!  Nap time.
