The “IN” Trends…

Want to know what’s going to be “IN” for the next year or so in home decor?

 I  have a great resource that I refer to when I want to know what trends are staying current as well as what’s  up and coming. Michelle Lamb, Editorial Director for The Trend Curve ™, was recently in Frankfurt for the Tendence fair where she saw what all the vendors were presenting. From this market she share what she sees as the trends for 2011. Today I share with you what’s “IN” for color.

COLOR

-  Purple reigned supreme

-  Best partner: Gray

 {hgtv}

-  Companies were introducing new Blues

{company c}

 {country living}

-  Greens looked good for Spring, but not Lime like before

 {colourlovers.com}

-  Neutrals grew, getting the market’s attention as they did so

{home decor trends}

The problem I face  every year is that I love all the new color trends… Just wish I could redecorate my house whenever this happens. How about you?

Celebrating Blog Week with…drumroll…. Decor8 Blog!

Tomorrow, we officially finish our week (and a day) celebration of International Blog Day. When we originally discussed the possibility of celebrating International Blog Day we planned to only spotlight a handful of our favorite blogs on August 31st. We quickly realized that we loved TOO MANY blogs and it would be nearly impossibly to narrow down our favorites to fill only 1 day. So version two of International Blog Dayquickly took shape and we concluded that if we  highlighted two blogs each day  for an entire week we would be able to get a good amount of content up from some of our favorite reads. It was only a matter of hours however that option 2 quickly went kaput due to an overwhelming amount of responses from some of our favorite bloggers! Not only were we flattered they responded to “little ol’ us” so quickly, but we were honored that these amazing Blog-ettes trusted us to use parts of their original content. {This may not make sense to some of you, but in the blogging world using someone else’s blog content is a big “No, No” without written approval.}

Anyways, one of the bloggers we where most anxious to hear back from but also resigned to not getting a response from was decor8 blog. Decor8 blog, (to us) started the home decor blogging revolution and when you are that important,  a lot of people tend to want your time and attention . We didn’t think getting a response was even possible since (most likely) there are hundreds and thousands of emails flooding her inbox on a weekly basis. Boy, were we wrong. As we sat in our office one bright and dreadfully hot Arizona day, I opened our email account to see that we had a response from the one and only Mrs. Holly Becker! (The Founder & Editor of decor8) I think I may have fallen off of my chair when I saw her name pop up in our inbox. and then I proceeded to faint when I read that she thought I was “cute”.  Got chills? Me too.

Emailing back and forth with Holly was like a blogging dream come true. It is no secret that we brag to anyone who will listen that WE have been following decor8 blog from some of her earliest posts…. I’m talking 2006 people! It feels like only yesterday that I stumbled upon decor8while sitting at my mothers kitchen table with my boobie Joanna. Since then, decor 8 has been apart of my life and I have loved every minute of it. Wow, I digress. Although it is near impossible to sum up the awesomeness of decor8 blog  in one post, I will attempt to highlight some of the best aspects- in my personal and professional opinion *wink.

Meet Holly Becker, an American writer and design consultant who splits her time between her offices in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Hannover, Germany.  Through extensive travel throughout North America and Europe, along with working for major magazines and interacting with talented artists and designers worldwide, Holly’s catalog of daily finds keeps her closely tied into the field.  Plus, it allows her to work as a design consultant & writer (while keeping her style fresh and creative).

In addition to decor8 and her design practice, Holly is a weekly columnist at Real Simple magazine online and she maintains a second blog, Haus Maus, where she documents her life as an expat. {Sidenote: Haus Maus is Holly’s little diary for documenting how an american sets up house in Germany. Haus Maus is also the nickname her husband Thorsten calls her.}

Holly also founded Blogging Your Way in February 2009, a series of online workshops that she instructs virtually for 200 students about creative blogging, writing from the heart, and making a blog and personal reflection of your own style and taste.

That’s not all folks! Holly has also worked for a number of top magazines, newspaper and television networks. Some of her most recent work includes: working as a columnist for Domino magazine online (2006-2009), Cookie magazine online (2008-2009), and as a bi-weekly columnist for the Boston Globe (in their Style & Arts section reporting on design trends). In addition to this, she has worked on assignments for HGTV, HGTV Ideas magazine as a Style Editor, Boston magazine, Adorn and LUXX magazine in Singapore.

Phew.  Let me take a moment to catch my breath.

Now do you understand why we were NOT expecting a reply?!  Although Holly has all that on her plate she still makes time to: email back bloggers in the making like us, be active with friends and family, travel, be a wife, and get this……. remodel and move into a new place in Germany!

This is one of the rooms in her new place. It’s all so dreamy. You must Go HERE to check out more! Oh, the floors.

Another aspect of decor8 that I absolutely love, is seeing Holly’s own personal style. Yes, she highlights amazing artist, designers, and products, but there is something about seeing her own purchases that makes my heart pitter patter. For example, Holly bought a 1940′s Jugendstil Style Vintage Buffet and these Wood and Wool Stools for her home! Seriously, how can you not love her after seeing her incredible purchases. It is obvious that she puts a lot of thought into her own purchases and I am completely inspired by it. (I tend to grab the cheapest thing around to fill the space in my home… totally backfires! Within a week I am completely over it.)

Holly also knows the value of “the Martha”. Her post Martha, Where Art Thou? made me appreciate the access I have here in America to “the Martha”. I often shake my fists at “the Martha” but, in all reality, I think she is an absolute genius. (even if she has thousands of Martha minions working for her and coming up with ideas.)

Like I mentioned earlier, decor8 highlights some of the best products and designers around. What makes decor8 posts so unique is her global perspective.  One of my absolute favorite products EVER is Sandra Monat’s (from Herzensart) collection of viking plates. I have posted about these amazing plates before, however they deserve another shout out!

Sandra is a German artist/designer and without decor8 I would never have stumbled upon these. That is why Holly’s perspective is so inspirational for readers. You will always find unique at decor8.

Lastly, decor8 is more than just a blog highlighting home decor trends and products. Holly makes it a point to get in touch with her readers and their personal lives. She often does “Real Talk”  posts, where she makes an observation or poses a questions in which readers are asked to give a “real” response.  My personal favorite is  Talk It Out: Half Empty, Half Full.  She writes, “I will call this space the “Half Empty, Half Full” corner today. It’s where you can literally dump what makes your life, or job, or anything “half empty” but make sure that before you end your post you include your “half full” feelings, too.”

I encourage you to go read her readers responses.

In conclusion, we adore decor 8 and you will too!

Celebrating Blog Week With ME OH MY!

Me Oh My is the blog of a wife, mother and student named Nicole! {sounds busy} I happen to come across her blog randomly about a month ago and it has become one of my favorite blogs to visit. Not only does Nicole have amazing style, but her pictures are flawless and her life in California makes me want to say Me Oh MY! (I think my desert dwelling days are numbered people…) Anyways, we wanted to highlight Me Oh My because Nicole is obviously knowledgeable about home decor, has some incredible DIY projects and you need to see her KITCHEN TABLE! Oh Vey, her kitchen table is ridiculous. Ridiculous = Amazing.

So please feast your eyes on some of Nicole’s (Me Oh MY) DIY projects.

#1

Me Oh My loved this garden planter above from Anthropologie for a while however she wasn’t wanting to  want to fork out $40! Makes sense to us!

Then one day she saw this at Homegoods-$9.99 are you out of your mind?

So she bought a can of cream textured spray paint, and gave the planters a good first coat.

Me Oh My then sprayed the planter with white spray paint (she always has cans of white laying around) After the white spray paint she again went back over it a few more times with the texture spray. This time concentrating on where she wanted thicker texture- at the base and at some of the angles on top.

She writes, “Of course the Anthropolgie one is much prettier, but there pass the test- especially mixed in with the other plants!”

Personally, I think these went beyond passing the test. They look AMAZING!

#2

This Garland seems complicated by the steps, but it is so simple! You must try it. I made them a while back, and found the tutorial here.

I wasn’t sure which fabrics to use, so I bought a few different kinds.

The silkier fabrics create a softer floppy flower, and the stiffer fabrics created a more of a structured flower. I preferred the sturdier fabrics. I got about a yard of each color of fabric I wanted to use. I then folded it a few times and cut it at about 3-4″ wide.  (Each cut varied.)

Unfold your fabric and thread your needle. Fold the fabric back and forth to make your stitch. This was the fastest way to get through all the fabric.

Once all of your fabric is thread, pull to gather the fabric down the thread to create your flower.

Knot the thread a few times to keep the middle of the flower tight.

After you finish all your flowers, glue onto selected trim. I went with a thicker more substantial trim, which I think really helped with the weight of the flowers.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT!

This post has inspired my Halloween Decor for 2010. Thank You!

Lastly, here are a few pictures of Nicole’s home…. look at the table.

Make Old New Again

Everyone is watching their money a little more closely these days. So when I came across these ideas for your home decor I had to share. Eileen Kathryn Boyd-a top interior designer from NYC- suggests updating your old pieces rather than buying new ones. Not only will you add some spice to your old stand bys, but you’ll save a ton of money!

Spray Paint

Boyd has an inexpensive way to turn old chairs into original works of art! Buy a can of high-gloss spray paint in a bold color and spray the frame of an old chair, leaving the neutral fabric. Now you have a chair that’s become a true statement piece, and don’t be afraid to use a bright orange or hot pink. The color will excite you and energize the space!

Fresh Fabrics

How many of us have hand-me-down furniture donated lovingly by friends and family – leaving us with the challenge of misfit styles and uncoordinated colors? One way to hip-up something vintage is re-upholstering with fun fabrics. Although re-upholstering is an investment, it costs less than buying brand new chairs. Try mixing and matching different colors and prints. It’s like stepping out with a new outfit and makeup.

Simply Removable

Boring hutch? Spice it up by painting or placing wallpaper behind it. Simply cut foam core so it fits snug in the back of the shelves. Then, using some spray-mount and a fabric or wallpaper of your choice, stick it and push to the back of the shelf. Your hutch will go from helpless to happening! This trick works for bookshelves, too.

Re-Design Your Desk

A dull desk is uninspiring! Find a refreshing fabric, something bright and motivating. Then have a slipcover made to fit the surface of your desk. Depending on your fabric choice this can be done for under $200

art update

I found some amazing prints at an antique store and am currently waiting for them to get ahem-custom matted & framed. I am so excited. Anything depicting history seriously makes my heart pitter patter. I got three prints all depicting very different scenes and  I’m sparing no expense making these prints come to life with their custom outerwear. I am planning on hanging these three darlings above my sofa… -Bam- Bam- Bam- When and if we ever move into our very own home, most likely they will go into the study.

The following pictures are images from just one of the prints. I am trying my darnedest to figure out what battle is being depicted & have narrowed it down slightly due to the presence of gunpowder and cannons.  Everything on the print is written in either German or Latin sooo its a little lost in translation right now.

{wish I would have taken some classes on German history now…}

Post Script: do you find it morbid that I am hanging a picture of war in my FAMILY room? I think it gives a message of ‘don’t mess with me or I’ll blow up in your face!’ I’m a ticking time bomb so watch out…

The Best Dressed Locker…

 If I could go back and be a student again-I would not be afraid to show off my creativity. I’d be especially daring when it came to my locker. In fact, one of my goals … to be crowned the “locker decor” queen of the school because my own personal space would be the best dressed.

And here’s some ideas on how I would dress it up….

Shelf Liner

Use shelf paper {another idea: drawer paper that’s scented} to line your locker door and walls (as long as your school approves of this because really, it’s their locker). Be sure to use transparent tape that is easy to remove – never use glue! There are plenty of shelf paper designs to choose from that will match your decorating theme or your personality.

 (Soap and Paper Factory’s scented drawer paper)

Mirrors

 It’s easy to find magnetic mirrors that are made for lockers. Check out your local store that sells school or office supplies. Locker mirrors come in very handy for between-class hair and makeup checks.

(Check here for info on how to make this mirror)

Magnets

Magnets are a great way to decorate your locker, since they’re removable. Colorful, funky magnets will brighten your day as you make pit stops between your classes. You can also create your own customized magnet set – just glue personal photos or cutout magazine pics onto store-bought magnets.

(Check here for instructions on how to make these magnets.)

Erasable Boards

These are great for leaving yourself reminders, like “Bring math book tomorrow” or “Meet BFF at Golden Spoon after cheer practice.” Get the kind that comes with dry-erase markers, so you can erase old stuff easily with a cloth.

(Check here for more info on this hanging flower erasable board.)

Photos

 This is the ultimate way to personalize your locker. Plastic frames with magnets on the back are an easy way to display snapshots. You also can buy packs of magnets (including ones that suit your locker “theme”) and use them to pin up your pics. Whatever your theme, be sure to include pictures of you and your friends-then you can see them and smile every time you open the door.

PB Teen Mini Frame Decals

Pencil Holder

 Buy an inexpensive mug that matches your theme, to hold extra pens and pencils. Or, store that stuff in clear, plastic containers with lids that allow you to see what’s inside the container without having to open it. Another idea-try an organizer that’s magnetized and attach to the inside of the door.

(Check here for more information on this magnetic storage pocket.)

Calender

 A magnetic calendar is a good thing to have on the door of your locker. You can use it to post your school schedule, for important events, or both.

PB Teen Daily Dot Calendars

Air Freshener

Most lockers get stale-smelling over time, so keep yours fresh with a decorative air freshner. {Check out Bath and Body Works’ car freshners}.Or, keep your favorite body spray in your locker and spritz away as needed. You can even match your smell to your locker “theme” {this may be carrying the theme idea to the extreme!}.

Decorating Disclaimer

Before decorating, check your school’s guidelines. Generally, schools have rules about what can be displayed and how it can be displayed.  Schools also may specify whether you can use tape, shelf paper and other adhesive materials. Even if your school’s rules are minimal, display materials that can be removed easily and give a favorable impression.

“Virtually” Paint Your Room…

Choosing a paint color for your home is so much easier-thanks to color visualizer programs offered online by all the leading paint companies. It takes the uncertainty and chore out of selecting your paint colors. It’s as easy as going to their websites, choosing the color {or colors} you want to use in your room and then virtually painting the room before you even take a trip to the store. Without spending a dime you can see which paint colors work together, figure out exactly where you want to use paint in your room and try out all of your ideas.

Here are some of my favorite ones:

 Remember- a color visualizer is a wonderful tool for giving you an idea of how a color will look. It’s then up to you to take that idea to the paint store and find the actual paint color that will produce that results you desire. Most often, it won’t be the exact color you choose online but will help you to narrow down your color choices in finding the color that will actually produce the look you love.

I NOW “Heart” TURQUOISE

The Turquoise color trend is still going strong.

 When it first was announced that turquoise would be one of THE hottest color trend for 2010 I wasn’t sure if I could handle it. You see, I’ve never cared for the color-ever since a neighbor of mine painted her house with bright turquoise just “ because ” she happened to like the color.   This was the beginning of my dislike for the color.

But after seeing all the different possibilities and the decor applications for this color-I’ve decided that I really like it. In fact, I NOW “Heart” IT. And if I had a room in my house that needed to be redone this color would be included in the new decor.

This color is strong in the world of wallpaper-just look at these colors and patterns.The turquoise color pops when you add white floors, doors and trim work .  {P.S. The wallpaper with the peacock feather design is an example of 2 design trends coming together for a spectacular look.}

A more cost effective way to add this color to your wall is with paint. Notice that the sofas in this room reflect the color of the walls-the heavy use of the turqoise color in this room  is softened by using dark wood accent furniture, white patterened drapes, white accessories and white framed wall art.

 If you feel like the color is too strong to use on your walls than I would go for the safe bet-pillows! You can never go wrong with pillows. They are the easiest way to add the latest color trend to your home decor. {I know that I sound like a broken record about pillows but they really are an inexpensive way to add new color to a room.}

 Turquoise is an easy color to pair up or combine with other colors. There as so many different possibilities. Here are a few of my favorites…

 Turquoise-Green

 Turquoise-Lime Green-Grey

 Turquoise-Yellow-Navy

Turquoise-Fuschia-Dark Grey

 Turquoise-Blue-White

 Turquoise-Tan-White-Silver

 Turquoise-Light  Blue-Grey-Dark Grey

I’m now convinced that turquoise  is the perfect color trend for Summer 2010 and that everyone should add a little turquoise into their world. However I need to warn you about ONE thing when it comes to the use of this color-{based upon my own personal experience}-USE CAUTION WHEN USING THIS COLOR TO PAINT TO EXTERIOR OF YOUR HOME- you run the risk of tramatizing your neighbors!

Summer Decor: Jute-Rope and Seagrass

The Jute/Rope and Seagrass look is always popular in the summertime. And with coastal decor still being very “in-style” it’s easy to find. All the catalogs that I’ve perused lately have a little jute rope or seagrass offerings- and it’s not just limited to baskets {which I happen to love}.

Look at some of my favorite findings…

Ballard’s  Spool Side Table

This table would look great in a nautical themed room. And it’s functional because you can take off the lid and store items inside.

Ballard”s Rope Knot Door Stop

 Use the doorstop as bookends on your shelf. I’m considering the idea for my family room bookshelves that’s in the process of being redone.

Ballard’s Addison Table Lamp

I think that this lamp would be awesome in your beach house-especially if you could fill it with small seashells.

Pottery Barn’s Japanese Float Pendant Chandelier

Here’s how the chandelier looks over a table-it’s larger than it looks in the previous picture. Don’t you think it’d look great over a table on your summer porch {you know, the one that overlooks the ocean}?

Pottery Barn’s Woven Decorative Lights

These lights can be placed on tables or hung up in your house as a chandelier. Once again I can see lots of these hanging outside in trees for a romantic summer look.

Pottery Barn’s Beachcomber Baskets

I love chunky baskets. They are so versatile-you can use them for laundry, for magazines and books, as planters and for setting on a shelf to store things.

 The color scheme of this room {where I will put my chunky baskets} is perfect for my future summer beach cottage. Want to come visit?

Crate and Barrel’s Plantation Chair

This woven chair has a very classic beach feel. You can place one or two of them next to your linen slipcovered sofa and you’ve got the perfect “beach house” seating arrangement .

Sea Inspired’s Nautical Rope Placemats and Coasters

If you’ve got a summer beach home these are a “must-have item” for your dining table.

Restoration Hardware’s Seagrass Tray

 And Restoration Hardware-one of my favorite catalog companies- knows how to take a seagrass tray and take it “over the top”…

 How great does it look on a coffee table with the chunky antique scale? I’m adding this {and my summer beach cottage} to my inspiration board.

Happy Decorating!

Orange is the new Red…

Orange in the new Red.

Since being introduced in 2009 as one of the hot colors-this color has caught on in popularity. It’s everywhere in 2010! You will see orange in every shade from a dark oranges-with lots of red undertones-to lighter shades that lean more towards yellow. Just take a trip to your favorite decor store and you’ll see it being offered in everything: dishware, pillows, furniture and rugs.

Allem Studio Pisces Pillow

If you consider yourself  “fashion forward” I’d suggest you consider adding some orange to the look of your home. But before you do, there’s a few things about this color that you might want to know.

 Jonathan Adler Mod Dot Dishware

Orange, a close relative of red, sparks more controversy than any other hue. There is usually strong positive or negative association to orange and true orange generally elicits a stronger “love it” or “hate it” response than other colors.

Global Views

Fun and flamboyant orange radiates warmth and energy. Interestingly, some of the tones of orange such as terra cotta, peach or rust have very broad appeal.

 Apartment Therapy

So what do you think?

Decor Tip: Pairing it with navy blue is the latest and greatest thing to do.

Just ask Barclay Butera who’s perfected this color combo.

This color combo works well in a bedroom. (Decor Pad)

I have to admit that I love the color orange.

Now if I can just figure out a way to add it to my home before it goes out of style.

3 Summer Decor Trends…

Coral Graphics

Coral is one of the hot color for both your home and closet this season. But did you know that coral graphics are just as popular this summer?  Especially timely for summer, coral accents evoke feelings of the beach. But you’ll want to play it safe and use them sparingly.

Boasting bold colors and patterns, Native American prints are amazing accents to your furniture in the form of pillows and throws. The shapes, colors and patterns all have stories behind them and are inspired by different Native American tribes across the United States.
