Using Gray in Home Decor

I don’t know about you and your area, but here in AZ, beige and tan interior paint choice for most homes.  Maybe it’s the influences of the desert landscape or the perception of  “safety” that makes these colors so popular.

Although I don’t own a home yet, I daydream of all the possibilities. One of the elements I often think about is paint colors.  Tan and beige are great colors, however there are a variety of colors we can use as neutral backdrops. Working on the latest project at Bella Fine’ Design, I am again reminded of all the paint possibilities!

One color that has been overlooked as an interior paint in the past due to the assumption it is cold and dreary, is GRAY.  Now Gray is everywhere. (Good for Gray… it’s a fabulous color.) The versatility of Gray can be seen in numerous decor magazines and home design TV programs.

There are so many beautiful gray hues!  Walls painted in medium or light grays offer a wonderful background for artwork and accessories. It is also neutral enough that adding dramatic colors in your furniture and textiles won’t be too overwhelming. Now, if you are still afraid gray will appear too sterile or cold even after seeing the beautiful pictures above, you can use grays with taupe and brown undertones to keep your home feeling warm.

Now if you happen to have a home already painted in tan, don’t go buying any paintbrushes yet! There is NO NEED to repaint. The addition of cool gray can be a welcome contrast to the warmth of the existing color. Use dark grays in rugs, accessories, textiles, light fixtures, and flooring to give an extra pop. This added contrast will freshen up your room, while keeping you from having to repaint.
